Let’s talk about Libyan Tuna Sandwiches – a classic dish that’s incredibly simple yet absolutely delicious! These sandwiches were a regular part of my childhood, perfect for picnics and quick meals that come together in just about 10 minutes.
Tuna Sandwiches Libyan-Style
Servings 2
Ingredients
- 5- ounce can of tuna drained
- 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
- Lemon juice to taste
- Pinch of salt to taste
- Pinch of black pepper to taste
- Hummus
- Sliced black olives
- Sliced tomatoes
- Harissa or Sriracha
- French Bread
Instructions
- Start by draining the tuna from the can and placing it in a bowl.
- Add extra virgin olive oil, salt, black pepper, and lemon juice to the tuna. Mix everything together until well combined.
- Slice the French bread and warm it up. Spread hummus on one side and harissa or Sriracha on the other.
- Layer the tuna, sliced tomatoes, and black olives onto the bread.
- Close the sandwich and get ready to enjoy!
Notes
- Genova tuna in olive oil is my top choice, as it adds a wonderful flavor. If you don’t have olive oil-packed tuna, you can drain the water-packed one and add your own olive oil.
- While harissa is traditional, Sriracha or Sambal work great too if you don’t have harissa.
- Though hummus isn’t traditional in Libyan tuna sandwiches, it adds a delicious twist that many enjoy.
- For extra flavor, try drizzling some high-quality extra virgin olive oil inside the bread before adding the filling and sauce.
- Lee’s Baguettes or any Vietnamese bakery bread works wonderfully, but feel free to use your favorite bread!
