Are you on the hunt for the cutest (and easiest) Super Bowl snack? Look no further than these adorable tailgate tots! Even the name sounds cute, right? When it comes to tailgate food, you want something that’s fun, creative, and, most importantly, easy to munch on while you’re glued to the game. These tots check all the boxes and then some. Whether you’re tailgating outside or lounging on the couch for game day, these tots are the perfect snack to keep you satisfied throughout all the action.
We’ve stacked tater tots, bacon, chopped chives, sour cream, and a homemade cheddar cheese sauce in mason jars to create these delightful layered treats. We opted for frozen tater tots for convenience (because let’s face it, game day is all about ease), but if you’re feeling extra fancy, go ahead and swap them out for our homemade air fryer tater tots instead. While we’re loving the loaded-potato-skins vibes, feel free to get creative with your toppings. Buffalo sauce, blue cheese crumbles (or ranch dressing), or even chili and cheese would all be delicious options.
We chose to assemble our tailgate tots in mason jars for an adorable presentation, but you can use any container you have on hand. If you do go with mason jars, opt for wide-mouth ones so you can easily reach all the layers. Of course, you can also layer your tots in small bowls. While presentation is key, the most important thing is using a container that makes it easy to layer and enjoy these tasty tots.
Tailgate Tots
Ingredients
- 1 32- oz. package of tater tots
- 8 slices of chopped bacon
- 1/4 cup of freshly chopped chives
- 1 container of sour cream
- 2 tablespoons of butter
- 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour
- 1 cup of whole milk
- 1 2/3 cups of sharp cheddar
- 1/4 teaspoon of chili powder
Instructions
- Heat the grill to medium.
- Spray two disposable pie plates with cooking spray and spread the tater tots evenly in each. Grill for about 20 minutes, stirring regularly. Set aside.
- Meanwhile, fry the bacon in a sauté pan over medium heat, then place it on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess grease.
- Make the cheese sauce: In a deep-walled sauté pan over medium heat, melt the butter. Sprinkle in the flour, whisking to combine and create a slurry. Gradually pour in the milk, whisking continuously, to form a thin sauce. Gradually stir in the cheddar and chili powder until everything is well combined. Remove the sauce from the heat.
- Layer the tater tots into small bowls or wide-mouthed mason jars. Top with cheese sauce, bacon, sour cream, and chives. Repeat the layers until you’ve reached the top of the containers. Enjoy your adorable tailgate tots!
