Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf (1 lb of challah, brioche, or sourdough bread (day-old bread works best))
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 2 tbsp molasses
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 tsp ground cloves
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • Unsalted butter for cooking

Instructions

  1. Cut the bread into sticks, each about 4 inches long and one inch wide.
  2. In a big bowl, whisk the eggs thoroughly. Add in the milk, cream, vanilla, maple syrup, molasses, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, and salt. Keep whisking until it becomes a smooth mixture.
  3. Heat up your griddle over medium heat. Once it’s hot, add 1 tablespoon of butter to the griddle.
  4. Dip each stick into the egg mixture for about 5-6 seconds on each side. Then, transfer them to the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until they turn a beautiful golden brown. Repeat this step with the rest of your French toast sticks.
  5. Serve these warm delights with a dusting of powdered sugar and/or a drizzle of maple syrup.
