Giant Cinnamon Roll Cake

Course Dessert

Ingredients

Dough:

  • 1 cup warm milk 110°F
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • tsp active dry yeast 1 packet
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 egg room temperature
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter melted

Filling:

  • ¾ cup brown sugar
  • tbsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter softened

Icing:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1-2 tbsp milk
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

Prepare the Dough:

  • In a large bowl, combine the warm milk and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  • Add 3½ cups of flour, salt, egg, and melted butter to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms.
  • Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes, adding the remaining flour if needed, until smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Make the Filling:

  • In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar and cinnamon.
  • On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough out into a large rectangle (about 16×12 inches).
  • Spread the softened butter evenly over the dough.
  • Sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture over the butter, making sure it’s evenly distributed.

Form the Giant Cinnamon Roll:

  • Cut the dough into long strips, about 2 inches wide.
  • Roll up one strip and place it in the center of a greased 9-inch round cake pan.
  • Take the next strip and wrap it around the center roll, continuing this process until all the strips are used and you have a giant spiral.

Bake the Cake:

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F.
  • Cover the pan and let the dough rise for an additional 20 minutes.
  • Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the cinnamon roll cake is golden brown and cooked through. If the top browns too quickly, cover it loosely with aluminum foil during the last 10 minutes of baking.

Make the Icing:

  • In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Adjust the consistency with more milk if necessary.

Ice and Serve:

  • Allow the cinnamon roll cake to cool for about 10 minutes in the pan.
  • Drizzle the icing over the warm cake.
  • Slice and enjoy your giant cinnamon roll cake!
